IBJJF Gi Rules 2026: The Complete Checklist to Pass Inspection

A practical guide to the current IBJJF gi rules, including sleeve and pant length, collar measurements, belt requirements, patch placement, and a simple self-check before competition.

It’s competition day. Adrenaline is pumping, you’re focused on the match — and then, during uniform inspection, you hear that your gi is not compliant. It’s the kind of problem that can cost you time, focus, and sometimes even your place in the bracket. To help you avoid that scenario, this guide breaks down the current IBJJF gi requirements in a clear, practical format. Before stepping on the mats, it’s worth checking your gi against the latest official standards instead of relying on old tournament habits or outdated advice.

The Quick Checklist: What Inspectors Look For

1. Color and Material

Only three gi colors are allowed: white, royal blue, and black. The jacket and pants must match, and the collar cannot be a different color from the rest of the jacket.

Painted gis are not allowed unless the design is limited to approved sponsor or academy logo areas. Patches are only permitted in authorized zones and must be properly sewn on.

2. Jacket and Sleeves

The gi jacket must reach the athlete’s thigh. With the arm extended straight and parallel to the floor, the sleeves must end no more than 2 cm from the wrist.

The sleeve opening must also be wide enough for the official 7 cm measurement tool to pass through. This is one of the easiest ways to fail inspection with a gi that feels fine in normal training.

3. Pants

Gi pants must end no more than 2 cm above the ankle bone. If the pants are too short, they can fail inspection even if the rest of the gi is compliant. A gi that has shrunk after repeated washing is a common problem here.

4. Collar

No embroidery or printing is allowed on the collar. The collar is checked for both thickness and width. The official measurements are:

· maximum lapel thickness: 1.3 cm

· collar width: 5 cm

5. Belt

The belt must be durable and between 4 and 5 cm wide. It should match the athlete’s rank and include a black tip for belts up to brown belt. Black belts may use a white or red tip.

Once tied, each end of the belt should hang approximately 20 to 30 cm.

6. Undergarments

For men, wearing a shirt or rash guard under the gi jacket is not allowed. For women, wearing a stretchy or elastic top under the gi jacket is mandatory. Women may also wear elastic leggings under the gi pants, but only if they are shorter than the gi pants.

Athletes must wear undergarments, and thong-type undergarments are not allowed.

7. Overall Condition

A gi can still fail inspection even if the measurements are correct. It must not be torn, excessively worn, wet, dirty, or have an unpleasant odor. Inspectors can reject a gi on condition alone.

How to Check Your Gi at Home

You do not have to wait until tournament day to find out whether your gi might fail inspection. A simple check at home with a measuring tape or ruler can catch most obvious problems in advance.

It is still only a preliminary check — the final decision always belongs to the inspector using official tools — but it can save you from a stressful surprise.

Sleeve Length

Stand upright and extend your arm parallel to the floor. Measure the distance between the edge of the sleeve and your wrist. It should be no more than 2 cm.

Pant Length

Stand upright and measure the distance from your ankle bone to the bottom hem of the pants. It should be no more than 2 cm.

Collar Measurements

Use a ruler or calipers to check collar dimensions. The lapel thickness should not exceed 1.3 cm, and the collar width should be 5 cm.

Sleeve Opening

With your arm extended, measure the sleeve opening. It should comply with the official 7 cm inspection standard.

FAQ

Is a two-tone gi allowed?

No. The gi must be a uniform color throughout, including the collar. A contrasting lapel makes the gi non-compliant.

Can a clean gi still fail inspection?

Yes. A gi can be rejected for being wet, torn, dirty, or having an unpleasant odor, even if the measurements are correct.

Why do some local tournaments allow gis that IBJJF rejects?

Local events are often more relaxed. IBJJF events apply a stricter and more standardized inspection process with official measurement tools.

What happens if my gi fails inspection?

Best case, you scramble to borrow or buy another gi before your division starts. Worst case, you miss your warm-up, lose focus, or are unable to compete.

Can I wear a custom gi with anime patches?

Only if the patches are placed in approved zones. Anything outside the allowed areas, especially near restricted areas, can create problems during inspection.

Should I bring a backup gi?

Yes. Even a gi that usually passes can fail after shrinkage, washing changes, or a stricter-than-expected inspection.

Final Thought

A gi inspection problem is one of the easiest competition-day mistakes to prevent. Spend ten minutes checking your sleeves, pants, collar, patches, and belt before the event, and you are far more likely to step on the mat focused on the match instead of worrying about compliance.
